When is it most important to go organic?

Shayla mentioned a few of the dilemmas we face when shopping for our food.  Do we prioritize organic over local?  Should fair trade always win out?  These are tough questions and most likely a decision each individual will have to make on their own.   However, I thought we could use some more detailed information in one area – organic food.

Have you ever wondered if some food is covered in more pesticides than others?  How can you know when to assure your food is organic and when it’s okay to buy mainstream?

A few other common recommendations to consider are:

  • Remember that organic food will often taste a little better, fresher and more like it was made to taste!
  • Buy organic for those foods you eat the most of.   If you’re consuming in large quantities – it would make sense to have less toxicity in those foods.
  • What you buy tells the grocery store, or restaurant, what consumers like.  The more we buy organic – the more common it will become…  or re-become (because it all used to be grown that way!!)
  • Organic food is better for the planet.  Avoiding synthetic pesticides cuts down: our consumption of fossil fuels, global warming gases, harm done to plants & wildlife, contamination to soil & water, etc.
  • Organic farming is much more sustainable.  And at a time when we should all be thinking about the longevity of our earth, sustainability is important.
  • Organic produce is higher in vitamin C and contains 30% more antioxidants.

And the good news?
